I know most of the group is composed of instructors, but for the newer students is there some kind of rank structure that you use, such as the 4 phase system employed in the old backyard days? How do you recognize student progress on the way to becoming an instructor?

We don't use phases. but some of our guys in the US and Europe do. We have so few guys that we just know when they're ready. Shawn King was the last instructor we've made and Evan Morgan will be the next.
