As the question says would it be beneficial or just confusing? I have alot of time on my hands at the moment, would it be a good move? Or maybe train at 2 JKD clubs?
Thanks |

I think it would be confusing. Although Wing Chun is an amazing martial art, and often people relate it to JKD...JKD doesn't really utilize our trapping range and tactics the same way WC does. I would keep with JKD, and later on if you really want to explore the arts involved in JKD, then take up some WC just for some extra knowledge.

Wing Chun you will give some nice fine tuning of your hands (sensitivity etc...), but the JKD instinct will/should override what the Wing Chun training tells you to do. My background is Wing Chun, but only after a few months of JKD, I would visit the Wing Chun school and play their drills with a JKD mindset. There is a big difference and here it is in it's simplest form - hit first. So I would yes, observe Wing Chun and extract from it what best works for you. (again, it is the basic JKD philosophy). There is some good stuff in there - make it better.

Thanks for the advice guys, I might go along to a few lessons.
What should I be looking for in a wing chun club, somewhere with ip man lineage? Anyone have knowledge about londonwingchun.co.uk? They seem to have great facilities and head sifu is Mark Phillips Sifu. |

Look for a wong shun leung lineage. His lineage emphasizes the interception, and Bruce learned a lot of what he knew from WSL, so there might be some foundational crossover. The WSL lineage has a similar "absorb what is usefull" approach, and aims to produce good fighters, not Wing Chun clones.

I think it is counterproductive.
If you can find a JKD Group with a Trapping oriented foundation you will be much happier. I took some time and trained with some Mantis people and I enjoyed it for a while and then it was frustrating. I took up with JKD training again (at the same time) and it just caused problems from both ends.... I was too loose and mobile in my Mantis classes and I was too stationary (and getting punched in the face in my other classes). I picked up a few tricks though. |
